Responsibilities

A smooth-running business requires an empowered team. To have a practice that will be independent and productive, it is necessary to give your staff the tools to succeed. In a new practice, it often falls upon the dentist to do many jobs that would otherwise be delegated. Having been the chief cook and bottle washer, it can be difficult to relinquish control and break this habit. Many employers often fall into the trap, “If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself.” This mindset will lead to micromanagement and much added stress. When beginning a practice, team members are limited. You must start from the ground and build up. It takes time to grow a strong team [...]

Mentoring

Mentorship is an important aspect in the beginnings of one’s dental career.  There are lessons that can be learned from a mentor, that may not have been taught during one’s education.  Being mentored is about self-analysis.  Look at yourself and search for areas that need growth.   There is not enough time in life to learn from all our mistakes and successes.  The clever ones learn from others. Dental school offers excellent clinical training.  However, there is a myriad of practice and business skills needed beyond the teachings in school.  The most obvious omission is business training.  The extent of this training usually consists of one or two lectures.  Another major oversight of dental schools is how to effectively communicate with [...]

Practice Positivity

As stated by Gautama Buddha, “Your mind is a powerful thing. When you filter it with positive thoughts, your life will start to change.”  The power of positivity is an important piece to becoming and staying successful.  No matter your role in the practice, we all need to assume control of our circumstances rather than be directed by them. Our attitude, be it good or bad, affects all the people around us, including patients and other staff members.  One way in which we practice positivity at Sullivan Dentistry is staying in our “bubble”.  We were trained in this term by the Scheduling Institute.  You might be wondering… what is the bubble?  Our bubble is only focusing on the things within [...]

Equipment

We live in a time where new technology surfaces on a daily basis.  This is just as true in dentistry as it is in any other field.  Most of the newly promoted technology is amazing.  However, as dentists, we need to take into consideration the return on the investment of the machine in relation to the cost.  It is important to invest wisely.  Technology is great but expensive, and it can hinder saving and investing for life and retirement. Cone beams, CAD/CAM, and scanners all offer great services to dentistry.  However, dentists often get in too deep with the hefty price tags of these new technologies, with what can cost of over $100,000.  A salesperson can always justify the price [...]

Where Do I Go From Here

Upon finishing dental school, it is obviously a big decision as to where to go. There is no question that there are multiple opportunities for dentists. The most obvious of these opportunities are the numerous corporate dental jobs available. Most of the openings are in middle to large sized towns with nice benefit packages. However, it is often overlooked as to the jobs that may be available in small towns and communities. The offices in these towns will many times offer an income potential that will greatly outperform that of the opportunities in larger towns. Sullivan Dentistry is a prime example of a great opportunity in a small town. With tremendous patient flow and a highly skilled, hardworking team even [...]

Patient Experience

“They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” -Maya Angelou   A key element in measuring the success of a practice is the patients within.  The first impression a patient has when they walk through the door is carried with them until they exit.  The goal is for the patients to feel welcome and comfortable, but also give them an experience they will relay to others.  There is no one part to our patient process that is more important than another.  All of the parts work synergistically to give our patients a 5 star experience. Sullivan Dentistry has a large patient base of approximately 15,000 active patients.  An average of eighty patients are [...]

Opportunities

For most new dentists, one of the major concerns after finishing school is… “Will I have the autonomy to practice dentistry the way I want?”.  Every dentist will have their own opinion about how a particular patient’s treatment should be completed.  This is often based on the dentist’s style of practice, along with his or her background and continuing education limitations. Our number one priority is to provide quality treatment to our patients.  Here at Sullivan Dentistry, we are continuously searching for dentists to aid in treating patients at our growing practice.  Located in the heart of Union City, our office has provided dental care for forty-six years.  We now have a staff of twenty-four; including three doctors, five hygienists, [...]

Dentistry From The Heart

“The measure of your success will be the measure of your generosity” -Pope John Paul II You cannot give away good. Whether you have heard this statement before or not, take a second to reread and think about it. Doing good and being generous always seems to come back in multiples. People often times do not understand the power of generosity. Whether it is bonuses, time, or financial gifts, we strive to be generous in all aspects of our practice. As an employer, I try to set an example of generosity. The result is a team that consistently goes above and beyond for each other, our patients, and our community.   We give back to the community in various ways. [...]

TEAM

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”  - Helen Keller      A friendly work environment is a vital aspect in any business. The environment in which we work affects how we work. Establishing a family friendly atmosphere solidifies a foundation of trust.      In the past, we have been short an assistant. This created an inconvenience in our work flow. The remaining employees came together as a team, to help fill the void. The assistants rearranged their schedules to make sure that all areas were covered. Seeing each other as family, they genuinely wanted to help. I think the fact that the employees are willing to devote their time [...]

Welcome to The Successful Dentist!

Welcome to The Successful Dentist. The purpose of this publication is to give insight into what is takes to be a successful dentist. My name is Gabe Sullivan, and I am a dentist in Union City, Tennessee. I graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 2006. Over these past years, I have learned a lot about what it takes to be a successful dentist; I want to share these tools with you. The staff of twenty-four includes three dentists and five hygienists. Our assistants have expanded duties, prosthetics, and restorative functions. Sullivan Dentistry’s success is not solely contributed to how many root canals we perform or teeth we extract. In my practice, we have grown to averaging [...]
